Influences of the Ottoman Land Law on the National Cadastral Law — An Interdisciplinary Conference

The Joint Postgraduate Programme of AUTH on «Cadastre: Legal, Technical And Environmental Aspects», alongside Sakkoulas Publications, will hold a conference on the influences of Ottoman Land Law on the National Cadastral Law. Scheduled for June 22, 2024, at the Sismanoglion Megaro Event Hall in Istanbul, the conference will run from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM.

The conference will start with a welcome speech by Professor Georgios Diamantopoulos. The first session will feature presentations on the jurisprudence of Ottoman lands, the right of disposal on such lands, exchangeable Muslim properties, special cadastre regimes, and adverse possession concerning Ottoman lands. Notable speakers include Georgios Gatsios, Konstantinos Papachristou-Dimitras, Elisavet Koutelopoulou, Antonios Lachanopoulos, and Magdalini Tsilingeridou.

Following a break, the second session will delve into the legal characterization and judicial effect of Ottoman land, the burden of proof in related trials, expert opinions in cadastral trials, and the impact of Ottoman court decisions in the modern Greek State, as well as the discovery of an Ottoman title of ownership as a ground for rehearing of a case. Speakers for this session include Maria Pertselaki, Irini Lantavou, Christos Zavraklis, and Maria-Fanouria Papantonaki, Associate at our Athens Office.

The conference will conclude with interventions, questions, and discussions, coordinated by Professor Diamantopoulos, who will also provide summaries and conclusions.
