You probably assume that as long as you have a brand strategy or have secured a premium domain name, nothing stands in your way. But in my career, I have seen this scenario play out so many times that I cannot stress this enough. Do not make this costly mistake in an attempt to save money or under the mistaken belief that your business is safe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What is an ID<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An ID constitutes the ornamental or aesthetic aspect of a product, protecting its visual appearance across shape, configuration, pattern, ornamentation, or colour combination. Unlike patents (which protect functionality) or trademarks (which protect brand names and logos), a design protects how a product looks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To qualify, a design must be new and possess individual character (whether registered or unregistered). Unregistered designs in Cyprus and the EU are automatically protected upon public disclosure. This protection lasts for a strict, non-renewable three years, whereas a registered design can last up to 25 years (renewable in five-year increments). Registration is generally advantageous as it provides a longer monopoly and protects against independent creation, whereas unregistered rights only protect against direct copying<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Traditional IDs include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Consumer Electronics:<\/strong> Smartphones, laptops, and smartwatches focusing on casing shapes, button layouts, and screen bezels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Automotive Design:<\/strong> Vehicle body styling, dashboard layouts, wheel rims, and interior seating geometry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Furniture &amp; Home Goods:<\/strong> Ergonomic chairs, lighting fixtures, kitchenware, and modular shelving units.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fashion &amp; Textiles:<\/strong> Unique clothing cuts, footwear silhouettes, surface patterns, and handbag hardware.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Packaging:<\/strong> Perfume bottles, beverage containers, and custom cosmetic jars designed to attract buyers on shelves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Modernized for the digital age, EU design rules explicitly expand definitions to cover movement, transition, and digital interfaces:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs):<\/strong> Static layouts, icons, screen graphics, and menu arrangements for software apps and digital devices.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Animated User Interfaces &amp; Transitions:<\/strong> Moving visual elements, screen transitions, loading animations, and gesture-driven UI changes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dynamic 3D Holograms &amp; Projections:<\/strong> Spatial digital designs, augmented reality (AR) virtual objects, and interactive three-dimensional projections.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Virtual\/Metaverse Assets:<\/strong> Digital-only design creations intended for use in virtual environments, video games, or digital marketplaces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The modernization of EU design rules addresses a fundamental limitation of the older regulations in that they were built for physical items. Today, a great portion of product value comes from software interfaces, virtual environments, and motion graphics.
