Michael Kyprianou & Co LLC, being an ardent supporter of female empowerment, was present to support an event organized by WISTA (Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association) Cyprus and the CSC (Cyprus Shipping Chamber), held under the auspices the Cyprus Deputy Minister of Shipping, Mrs Natasa Pilides.
The event took place on the 20th of June, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Limassol, on the occasion the “Day of the Seafarer.”*
The theme was in support of IMO’s 2019 Campaign: “I Am On Board with Gender Equality,” a campaign adopted by the IMO aiming to improve diversity in the shipping industry. Speaker at the event on behalf of the IMO was Mrs Natasha Brown, Media & Communications Officer, Legal Affairs and External Relation Division, IMO (International Maritime Organization), who presented the aim of this campaign.
Mrs Anna Vourgos, President of WISTA Cyprus, made the opening address, followed by Mr Andreas Hadjipetrou, Vice-President of CSC and WISTA International President, Mrs Despina Panayiotou Theodossiou, who emphasized the need to embrace gender diversity and work towards an inclusive shipping industry, where women are not only present in leadership roles but actually have a say in shaping the industry’s future.
The #IAmOnBoard campaign emphasizes the importance and value of women within the professional ranks, by highlighting opportunities for women in a wide range of maritime careers, focusing mainly on the aspect of seafarers. IMO’s programme “Women in Maritime”, denotes the need for more women in the maritime industry, especially in leadership roles.

* The Day of the Seafarer is designated on the 25th of June each year and was launched in 2010 by the IMO. The purpose of this day is to give thanks to seafarers for their contribution to the world economy and the civil society; and for the risks and personal costs they bear while on their jobs.
