On 6th December 2018, Michael Kyprianou & Co LLC participated in the European Communities Trademark Association (ECTA) workshop, the first of its kind, entitled “IMPLEMENTATION OF THE TRADE MARK DIRECTIVE IN THE EU MEMBER STATES PLAIN PACKAGING – RECENT DEVELOPMENTS AND PRACTICAL CONSEQUENCES FOR THE INDUSTRY”, held in Larnaca, Cyprus.

Mr. Sozos-Christos Theodoulou, ECTA President, presented the two subsequent panels consisting of experts in the field of Trademarks. Mrs. Stalo Papaioannou a Senior Officer and Head of the IP Section for the Registrar of Companies and Official Receiver for the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism presented the current legal framework as well as some notable changes and achievements of the Office.

A case was put forward as to the upcoming implementation of the new trademark directive (EU) 2015/2436, and some of its key provisions were analyzed.  Some of these include the removal of graphical representation for a mark application and lengthening the advanced notification of expiration to six months.
