Christos Galanos invited to discuss the legal aspects of Turkish attempts to re-open the fenced off town of Varosha

topic

Christos Galanos, Senior Associate at Michael Kyprianou & Co LLC, recently attended an event hosted by the President of the Democratic Rally Party, the current governing party in Cyprus, to discuss the legal aspects of Turkish attempts to re-open the closed town of Varosha in Famagusta to settlers.

The fenced off section of Varosha is under Turkish military control and has been uninhabited since 1974, when its inhabitants fled to safety during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. UN Security Council Resolution 550/1984 “[C]onsiders attempts to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants as inadmissible and calls for the transfer of that area to the administration of the United Nations.”

Christos, along with other distinguished lawyers, shared his views in relation to the legal aspects of the developments as well as his suggestions for a constructive way forward.
