Amendment to the Civil Registry Law

On 1 December 2017, the law amending the Civil Registry Laws 2002 to (No 4) of 2015, was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic and provides, inter alia, the following:

  • The extension of the period from 3 months to 4 months, in which a person who holds a Cypriot nationality and is located within the Republic is obliged to enter the population register.
  • If a person is convicted of failing to register with the Population Record within the above deadline, the penalty payment of €5,000, currently in force, is reduced to €2,500 and the sentence for imprisonment is abolished.
  • The provision providing for the acquisition of Cypriot nationality, automatically upon birth, is clarified.
  • The provision that foresees the possibility of revoking the Cypriot citizenship from a person who acquired it by virtue of naturalization or registration as a citizen of the Republic is devised.
